Dance Competitions at Fantasia Festival!

The Competitions
We are proud to announce that the Fantasia Festival is the new home for the wonderful Isis Award, Cleopatra Award and Palace Dancers Award competitions. We have also updated the awards to include Fusion Dance, because we believe it to be an exciting branch of the Belly Dance world.
We are very excited about this, because we want to show the world that our art form has exacting standards and we know what a fantastic effect winning a competition of this kind can do for a dancer's career. We know how hard it is to become recognised in your own country or abroad, and the extra boost a competition can give is invaluable. As we have dancers from all over the UK and other countries at Fantasia, we expect a rich and varied mix of competitors!
We have three competitions for you, each with its own identity. All competitions take place in the Studio Theatre at Fantasia. If you would like to enter please register early to avoid disappointment, as places are limited.
The Isis Award
For Oriental Soloists - Saturday 2:00-4:00pm
This competition celebrates Oriental Belly Dance in all its forms. Dances can be in any authentic Middle Eastern style, including folkloric styles. If props are used, they can include veils, sticks/canes, sagat/zills or skirts/dresses (eg. Khaleegy dress). Dances should be no longer than 5 minutes.
First Prize:
A free place on a Farida Adventures Dance Holiday in Egypt.
This can be either the Farha Festival in Luxor, May 2012, or a free place
on one of the Farida Adventures Cairo trips (subject to availability).
Must be taken in 2012 and is not transferrable for cash equivalent.
Flights not included.
A winner's sash or medal.
Second Prize:
A winner's sash or medal.
Third Prize:
A winner's sash or medal.
The Cleopatra Award
For Fusion Soloists - Sunday 11:00-1:00pm
This competition celebrates Fusion Dance in all its forms. Dances can be in any Fusion style or in styles from other countries other than the Middle East, but must have Middle Eastern influences. This can include ATS, Tribal Fusion, Flamenco/Arab Fusion or any other you have dreamed up! Props can include wings, swords, fanveils, skirts, or anything else. Dances should be no longer than 5 minutes.
First Prize:
Free participation in BellyFusions Festival in Paris, 2012.
A performance slot in the Friday night show, a free ticket for the
Saturday night show and free tickets for 2 workshops
(choice of workshops subject to availability).
A winner's sash or medal.
Second Prize:
A winner's sash or medal.
Third Prize:
A winner's sash or medal.
The Palace Dancers Award
For Groups in All Styles - Sunday 1:30-3:30pm
All groups can register and in any style with a Middle Eastern slant, including Egyptian, Turkish, Folkloric (e.g. Saidi, Khaleegy, Dabke, Karsilama), Balkan Gypsy, ATS, Tribal Fusion or any other. Dances should be no longer than 5 minutes.
First Prize:
A £100 voucher from Farida Dance, to spend on anything in their
souk
or website.
A winner's sash or medal for each member of the group.
Second Prize:
A winner's sash or medal for each member of the group.
Third Prize:
A winner's sash or medal for each member of the group.
Judges
The judges will be announced in the Autumn. They will be experienced and respected dancers and teachers from amongst the star names at Fantasia.
Marking
In all categories marks will be awarded for technique, choreography, performance skills, musical interpretation (including expression and phrasing) and presentation (including costume and grooming).

To Watch
Tickets to watch the competitions are free if you have a workshop ticket for that day.
To come to Fantasia without booking a workshop, there is a fee of £4 (cash on the door only). This includes entry to the Souk and to watch the competitions on that day.
